Justinian I, also known as Justinian the Great, was the Eastern Roman ( Byzantine ) emperor from 527 to 565. He aimed to restore the Roman Empire, and although he only partly succeeded, he made significant progress by reclaiming some territories of the Western Roman Empire. Justinian is mainly remembered for his role as a lawmaker. During his reign, he restructured the Byzantine Empire's government, implemented reforms to tackle corruption, and played a key role in shaping church policy. As a staunch defender of Christian Orthodoxy, he actively opposed various religious groups, including Greco-Roman pagans, Manichaeans, Samaritans, Arians, and Monophysites.
