Byzantine Empire, Aspron Trachy For nearly a millennium, the Byzantine Empire was a center of learning, culture, trade, and Christian faith—arguably the brightest light in the Dark Ages. Billon is an alloy of copper or bronze with small amounts of silver. Aspron trachea were struck with the religious figures—Jesus, the Virgin, or both—on the anvil die, making that side the obverse. The emperor or emperors, shown facing instead of in profile, are at the bottom of the ”cup.“ This coin was issued during the reign of Manuel I Komnenos, grandson of Alexios I and nephew of Anna Komnene.--Also includes signed copy of the new book, EMPRESS, by Greg Olear.
